Incoming Belgian Beers

Below is the list of the beers we offered at our 2012 Festival. As soon as the last festival ended we started in on researching and developing the list for the 2013 festival. While dropping some from last year we are adding over 70 new beers to the Festival. Plus, in working with importers, our distributors and even the breweries we were able to line up several new beer releases including the US national release of Popering's Dark Hommel Bier, 3 mid-west releases and over a dozen Michigan releases.

This is a collection rather than an accumulation. That is, we're getting the best that brewers have for us rather than just everything they have. Its not quantity, although there are plenty here, but QUALITY. As we say, "Belgian bier is not a beverage. Its an experience."

We will have up to 47 different Belgian beers on draft at any given time. New ones will rotate in throughout the festival. The availability of many of these is limited. When they are gone, they are gone. Last year we had over 160 different beers with over half of them in draft, many for the first time in the state and even the country. It looks like we are lining up 160+ for the 2013 Festival.

In this environment, the beer is allowed to slowly mature into its complex and delicious character. After a few years, the slight tartness grows and begins to give the beer a vinous, wine like flavor. This version of Oerbier is matured for 18 months in Calvados (apple) wine casks. This aging process creates new flavors in three different ways. The flavors of the wood, that are used to improve wine, can come out into the beer, creating oaky, and tannic flavors.
